5 Benefits of Restorative Yoga

1. Improves Sleep

2. Enhances Flexibility

3. Quietens the Mind

4. Assists the Body to Recover from Illness

5. Helps with Weight Loss

1. Improves Sleep

The slower pace and deep breathing in restorative yoga has a calming effect on the nervous system that allows the body to soften and come out of the regular flight, fight or freeze response they so many of us are caught in. The body relaxes and goes into rejuvenation mode which is when it can begin to repair itself and renew energy levels.

2. Enhances Flexibility

Restorative yoga uses props and the comfortable hold of poses to work into the deep connective tissue of the body and the fascia that covers the body. It may not seem like a strong enough practice to gain flexibility, but the muscles are able to gradually and easily stretch creating more movement in joints and clearing energetic blockages within the meridians.

3. Quietens the Mind

When we allow ourselves this space to consciously treat ourselves, we honour who we are and how we feel. We find balance in our emotions and peace in our lives. Restorative yoga can be a calming hug for your overstimulated mind. Be patient as sometimes the most challenging part of restorative yoga is to sit with your mind. Over time, you will learn how to drop into a place of stillness and be content in the present moment.

4. Helps the Body to Recover from Illness

Because restorative yoga is so gentle it allows you to practice when your energy is low and your body is building strength. It helps you to move into a deeply relaxed state and in this state the body experiences detoxification and healing.

5. Helps with Weight Loss

Even though restorative yoga is not a very energetic style of yoga, studies have shown that it helps to reduce cortisol, a stress hormone that causes the body to store fats.

See you on the mat
